Peaceful Gatherings ... Meet with other
peaceful gathering types The Peaceful Gatherings Clef Swallows Michele Gordon Joy Sabol to receive Peaceful Gatherings Peace & Environmental Award Peaceful Gatherings has named Joy Sabol as the recipient of its Peace & Environmental Award for 2010. The Peaceful Gatherings Peace & Environmental Award is given to individuals or groups in the community who demonstrate a serious and sustained involvement to develop greater awareness and support of peace, justice and environmental issues. The annual award, formerly known as the Peace Scholarship, ranges from $300 to $500. In June, 2009, Peaceful Gatherings awarded $400 to the East High class raising money for "Pennies for Peace" to support Greg Mortenson's efforts to build schools in poor villages in Afghanistan. “Joy Sabol will receive a $400 award,” said Frank Anastasio, who led the group’s award selection committee. “The committee was impressed by Ms. Sabol’s commitment to community service and the environment, demonstrated by her work at Spencer Crest Nature Center, in Corning Community College recycling drives and by volunteering at the High School Learning Center even after graduating in February 2010." The High School Learning Center (HSLC) nominated Ms. Sabol for the award, noting she has applied to serve with an AmeriCorps disaster relief team in the near future. “Joy truly wants to serve and help others; both in America and abroad,” wrote HSLC Head Teacher and Counselor Marjorie Van Vleet in her letter of nomination. She believes “in the importance of the Nature Center’s mission to teach about the environment to a variety of groups in a clean and natural setting.” HSLC Science Teacher Peg Vogel wrote, “Joy has an integrity surrounding her that commands respect from everyone who meets her. She is very deserving of the Peaceful Gatherings Peace and Environmental Award.” The award will be presented to Joy Sabol June 23, 6 p.m. at Corning Community College. Peaceful Gatherings provides opportunities for the greater Corning, NY community to learn about peace, social justice and environmental issues. One day we must come to see that peace is not merely a distant goal we seek, but that it is a means by which we arrive at that goal. We must pursue peaceful ends through peaceful means. - Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
